This is a list which has the picks of i5 10th Generation Laptops for a wide group of people which consists of the one’s looking for an office laptop, students who prioritize coding and other software .For the people who are looking for those gaming machines for fulfilling their gaming desires. This is made fully targeting the intel i5 10th generation laptop CPUs so they will be in all of the laptops you are about to see.

Things To Know Before Buying a Laptop

There are things to understand before you buy a laptop for yourself and after reading all of this section you will be able to pick the specs that are for you and the ones that you should not bother much.

Laptops are compact but can perform actions you command and can even run some modern demanding applications and yet be portable too which is actually the whole point of a laptop over a personal computer which is not portable.

People can debate for hours and hours over this topic that PC’s are cheaper and yet can compete with a high end laptop without any doubt and all. But listen carefully it all comes down to what you need, if you need portability do not limit yourself with a pc and get a laptop because that is what is meant for your purposes and if someone does not prioritize portability he/she might be recommended a PC. What’s the big deal in this?

Laptops are simply the best tools that help you work or play whether you are at home or on the road or in the office. Although people use smartphones and tablets more due to the even more compact size and versatility. But it is a fact that laptops offer bigger screens relatively and are simply far more powerful as they need to perform a lot and demanding applications.

There is a very wide variety of things to look for in a laptop that makes deciding the one for you a challenge. But this article is made to help you with it.

Resolution

This is very obvious that your laptop’s screen will probably be about 15 inch and in any case not bigger than 24 inch and for all that 1080p is very fine and there is not any need for increasing this. Still some customers demand 4k and 5k resolutions in these small screens just because of the unnecessarily increased pixel density which might look little good but overall it’s subjective and definitely not needed.

Also this makes it tougher for the GPU and CPU to perform tasks at that high resolution.

Type of Panel

Again this is subjective but keeping it general there are 3 types of panels used –

  • Ips or in plane switching type panels which are the best of these three in terms of viewing angles and color reproduction.
  • Va or vertical alignment type panels which have the best contrast ratio of all but not the best color reproduction and viewing angles but not the worst too.
  • Tn or twisted nematic type of panels which have the poorest color reproduction and viewing angles of all but are known to have fast response times.

Screen Size

From 12.5 to 14 inch screens are meant to offer good balance between usability and portability. Bigger screens might be good for you if you do not travel very much and smaller screens than this are good for kids. But here is properly classified sizes –

  • 11 to 12 inches – these are the thinnest and lightest of them.
  • 13 to 14 inches – provide probably the balance of usability and portability.
  • 15 to 16 inches – these are significantly big for a laptop and look great if you like big screens but these might reduce the portability for the ones who travel a lot. But if you are okay with it then this is a good choice.
  • 17 to 18 inches – fairly expensive and significantly reduces portability but these are not for the majority of consumers and only for some limited customers.

Ram

For this modern world the minimum you should get for your laptop is 8gb of ram. And if you require some very big programs that demand higher ram storage then you should look for it accordingly. But 16gb of ram is very good and even future proof for some upcoming years and capable of running pretty much all games and programs you throw at it other than 4k or 8k video editing which require 32gb or even higher.

SSD and HDD

You should look for ssd due to their fast speeds which will make you feel that your laptop is faster significantly than a hdd. This speed is felt while opening programs and even when launching your windows if all of it is installed on the SSD.

Battery life

One of the most important features to look for in a laptop is battery life. If the hardware is solid then the battery life should keep up to be the same even after a couple of years of usage but if it is not that good then the battery life reduces enormously and after one or two years you would be using it in a sort of wired mode with always the charger attached to it.

Keyboard and Touchpad

No sense of talking how powerful your laptop is if the keyboard and touchpad ruin your experience. Make sure that the keyboard has a good strong tactile feedback , plenty of key travel ( the distance the button goes down when pressed, usually 1 to 2 mm ) and adequate spacing between the keys if you know that you would be spending a lot of time on your laptop. For touchpad you should look for the precision touchpad drivers. The touchpad should respond to your multi touch gestures like pinch to zoom and avoid any jumpy cursors. If you are considering a business laptop then you should look for the pointing stick or nub which is placed between the G and H keys which helps to navigate without removing your fingers from the keyboard.

CPU

Yes I know that I already said that this article will feature laptops with only 10th gen CPUs but you should know that intel introduced two types of 10th gen processors – ice lake and comet lake. And I would not be discussing it entirely here but will give a little info about them. Ice lakes is the one having 10 nm chip that offers improved Iris plus graphics whereas the comet lake is the one having 14 nm chip and is focused on raw performance.

So you should figure out which one you need for yourself and then decide for yourself about this.

GPU

For the basics if you are not playing pc games, creating 3d objects or doing video editing of high resolution then the integrated graphics chip will be fine for you but if you do any of the above you may need to consider a good GPU for yourself.

There are discrete graphic cards from AMD and NVIDIA which might be essential for you for the later case above.

Like the other components the GPU also has both low end and high end options. The GTX 1650, 1650 ti are considered to be low end and 1660 upto a rtx 2060 are considered mid end while the rtx 2070 and above are in the high end range. But do not be mistaken it is never necessary to own a high end GPU due to its excellent performance rather this is a subjective topic too which solely depends on your needs and preferences. Even a low end GPU might do it all for you so know your needs before throwing a lot of money for an overkill ( for your needs and not in any other sense ) spec machine.

Bezel or border of the screen

This is also a fact to consider as bigger bezels often steal the immersion from your usage experience. A borderless screen might look very elegant and attractive as compared to one with thick bezels.

Brand

Now people do often underestimate this section but you should pay attention to the brand as some brands are known for their good quality and some for their bad quality controls and services. Everything seems to be right until any single problem occurs and that is the time you come to know whether that brand was the right one to go with or not. Good customer service, proper quality check and plenty of service stations for customers to have at least one near by them are some of the features of a good brand.

Speakers

This is not a section to discuss much as probably all laptops have speakers that will do minor jobs but do not expect anything higher than that because you might get disappointed. And you should think that it is so compact so what do you think to fit inside it, a home theatre? That’s as foolish as it looks and if you need something like that opt for headphones or some speakers according to you.

Now , this section has supposedly exposed you to know all the basics that you should know before considering a laptop for yourself out of the list. So let’s just skip everything else and dive into the list.

Keep in mind that this list is arranged in increasing order based on current price and nothing else. And prices may vary at the time of your purchase.

6. Lenovo Legion 5i

Lenovo-Legion-5i-10th-Gen-Intel-Core-i7-15.6-inch-Full-HD-Gaming-Laptop

Spec sheet –

Screen size15.6 inch
CPU10th Gen Intel Core i5 (i5-10300H)
GPUGTX 1650
Resolution1920 × 1080
Screen TypeIps
Weight2.3 kg
Ram8GB RAM DDR4-2933MHz
SSD/HDD1TB HDD + 256GB SSD
Battery life5 hours

It has a processor with 2.5 GHz (Base clock frequency) – 4.5 GHz (Max boost clock), 4 Cores and 8MB Cache. The ram is upgradable up to 16gb too.

The usp of this laptop is the 120hz refresh rate it provides along with the display being ips with anti glare technology. And a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 4GB GDDR6 Graphics card.

Honestly speaking the GTX 1650 cannot take the full advantage of the 144hz refresh rate display that we mentioned in the previous laptop , for the majority of games but 120 hz increases the full usability as there would be games for 1650 to maintain 120fps. And there is not much recognisable difference between a 120hz and 144hz display. The 120 hz will do the job of providing a smoother experience than a 60hz which you will realise when you see this in person.

The keyboard here used too is really great and is clicky as well as accurate.

The laptop does handle the job of cooling very well and thermals are maintained for almost all times.

There is a lot to like here – sound which is Dolby certified, speakers by Harman, fantastic screen and typing experience. Powerful CPU and GPU and an excellent cooling solution. While not entirely related, I loved the fact that any buyer can upgrade the warranty upto 3 years for extra 2 thousand rupees. That’s a really nice touch according to me.
