How To Choose the Right Gaming Laptop?

Looking for a decent gaming laptop in the middle of a global pandemic? Well, don’t fret ,we have some suggestions and recommendations for you in case all those options have you flustered.

The Indian market has always been a bit backward in terms of availability of decent electronic hardware. Moreover ,since gaming ,especially PC gaming is still such a niche category in the country, we have a really hard time getting the hardware we want.

The most important thing you have to keep in mind when you see the US prices of newly launched electronic products is that, taking into account all the taxes and customs duty, $1 will probably cost you ₹100 in India. It’s a sad truth but in general, this is how you should treat US prices.

The laptop market, even with all its shortcomings like higher prices and lack of available stock, is the only reasonable choice for college students and people who objectively want the portability of a laptop.

The best time to buy a laptop is during the Big Billion Day sale of Flipkart and The Great Indian Sale of Amazon, where you could find laptops that usually go for around 1 lakh(i.e Acer Helios 300 with 1660ti) sell for around 85k. A sale like this is not to be missed if you want to get the best bang for your buck.

So, as a new laptop buyer, here are the things you should keep in mind when you will buy that shiny new blazing fast laptop:

The Right Processor:

AMD is leading in this department this year. With the release of their 4000 series chips, they have brought laptop performance to a new level. The Ryzen 5 4600H is the budget king if you want top of the line performance at a budget, since it even beats the I7 10750H, a much higher priced CPU.(attach link from youtube).

The Ryzen 7 4800H is the best overall performing CPU in the laptop space that you can get in India. It completely obliterates the competition in multicore applications such as Video Editing and rendering and also consumes far less power than its Intel competition.

The Right Graphics Card:

Let’s face it,its 2020. DO NOT BUY a 1050ti laptop, the websites are still selling it for stupidly high prices. To be on the safe side to play AAA titles for the next one to two years, consider buying a 1660ti laptop or a RTX 2060 one.

The Cooling System:

A hot laptop is never a good sign. The life of your laptop depends on its cooling system. The lower the temps, the better. So check for reviews online before selecting one.

The Storage:

The market is steadily shifting towards SSD’s and HDD’s are getting removed from laptops, so I’d suggest going for a laptop that has SSD storage. If you are only going to be playing one or two competitive games then a 512 GB SSD is fine.

But for content creators and gamers who like to keep more than 5 or 6 games on their laptop, a 1TB SSD would be the best way to go. The  speeds are much faster than a HDD, and will make your life much easier.

For most users, an 8GB stick of RAM should be more than enough, but for future proofing your laptop, check for dual channel 16GB of RAM on your laptop. It’s the sweet spot and would be beneficial if you have an AMD CPU too,as the performance is better.

The Display:

If you play competitive games, then a high refresh screen will give you an advantage. A 144Hz screen is the one you should go for. There are higher refresh rates available, albeit at a higher price. Secondly, if you are a content creator and have to work on a lot of color work, then getting a display with better color accuracy(above 90% sRGB) would be the obvious choice.

Low Budget (60,000 to 70,000)

The only downside is that it has an HDD instead of a solid state drive,so the system might be slower in the long run. Also, it has a 60Hz screen.

4. Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3

(AMD Ryzen 5 4600H, 8GB RAM,1TB HDD,256GB SSD,GTX 1650ti)

In terms of graphical spes, this is the best laptop in this price range. The Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3 has the Nvidia GTX 1650ti, the best card you can get under 70,000. The only downside is that it has a 60Hz screen. But if you want to play AAA games on your laptop and want the best graphics card on a budget, this is the one for you.

Mid Tier Budget (70 to 90k)

5. HP OMEN 15

(AMD Ryzen 4600H,8GB RAM, 512GB SSD, GTX 1650Ti)

Check Availability : Flipkart

The Omen 15 is the amped up version of the HP Pavillion, with almost the same specs but a much better build quality. It has a 512 SSD,8GB of RAM and has an Nvidia GTX 1650ti. Although the screen is still 60hz, it is a very good deal.

The Omen series is the premium line up of gaming laptops by HP, and the design overhaul since last year has been received well by both reviewers and consumers alike.

It is a much sleeker and minimalistic design, which looks really professional for a gaming laptop. Also, the Tenkeyless keyboard layout is a very cool design rarely seen on laptops.

6. HP Pavillion Gaming

(Ryzen 5 4600H, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, 256GB SSD,144Hz Screen,GTX 1650)

7. Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3i

(Intel i7 10750H, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD,256GB SSD,GTX 1650)

Check Availability : Flipkart

If you value your processor more than the graphics card, then this is one to look out for. The Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3i is the cheapest laptop you can get that has the i7 10th gen CPU inside it.

If your work requires more CPU cores, then this is the perfect budget buy.

8. Asus TUF Gaming A17

(Ryzen 7 4800H, 16GB RAM,1TB HDD, 256GB SDD,120Hz screen,GTX 1660ti)

Check Availability : Flipkart

At 91,000, the Asus tuf A17 is one of the premier options in this price range. But its specs justify its cost. This beast of a laptop has the Ryzen 7 4800H CPU, 16GB of RAM, 1TB of HDD and 256GB of SDD and the Nvidia GTX 1660ti. And the cherry on top is that it has a 120Hz display.

If you want the absolutely best laptop for gaming, this should be the one to get. But having such a beastly setup also has its cons. The biggest one is the thermal design.

The laptop gets hot a lot and if you play for extended periods of time ,then expect the laptop to overheat. There are a few ways to reduce the temperatures but your mileage may vary.

9. Asus ROG Strix G15

(Intel i5 10300H,1TB SSD, 8GB RAM, GTX 1650ti,144Hz screen)

Check Availability : Flipkart

At 85,000, the Asus ROG Strix G15 is a laptop that delivers specs that may be found at a cheaper price, but if you want a flashy laptop that will catch everyone’s eyes, this is it.

This laptop is famous for its RGB effects and the RGB strip underglow. The laptop has the i5 10th gen processor, a 1TB SSD(a big plus), 8GB of RAM, GTX 1650ti and a 144hz screen.

10. HP Omen 15

(Ryzen 5 4600H,8GB RAM,512GB SSD,GTX 1660ti)

Check Availability : Flipkart

If you want a GTX 1660ti laptop and play mostly AAA games, than this is probably the best option for you. This laptop has the Ryzen 5 4600H, 8GB of RAM,512GB SSD but a 60hz screen.

But in terms of performance, this laptop punches way above its weight thanks to its processor and the graphics card.

11. Acer Predator Helios 300

(Intel i5 9300H,1TB HDD,256GB SSD,16GB RAM,GTX 1660ti,144hz Screen)

The Acer Predator Helios has the reputation of being one of the best performing laptops of 2019. This laptop has the i5 9th gen,16GB of RAM,1TB HDD,256GB SSD and GTX 1660ti.

Although the processor is a bit underpowered, for purely gaming purposes, it will do fine. The thermals on this laptop are also really good.  But the laptop is really hard to get since nowadays it’s mostly out of stock.

12. Acer Nitro 7

(Intel i7 9750H, 8GB RAM,1TB SSD,GTX 1660ti,144hz Screen)

Check Availability : Amazon

The Acer nitro 7 is a really nice option if you want an i7 and a 1660ti combo. With almost identical specs to the higher priced Acer Predator Helios 300, it’s a good alternative.

But it’s only drawback is that the thermals are a bit high on the laptop,so make sure to buy a cooler or if you are a little more adventurous you could try undervolting the CPU and GPU.

High Tier Budget(above 1 lakh)

13. HP Omen 15

(AMD Ryzen 7 4800H ,RTX 2060, 1TB SSD, 144hz screen, 16GB RAM)

This is my personal recommendation if you have a budget of more than 1 lakh. This is probably the best laptop out there that has the best specs for its price, because most other laptops in this range start to have absurd pricing. The intel variant of this laptop costs the same but has an underwhelming 1650ti paired with it.

So, finally, with all the specs in mind, this is the best laptop you should buy, but there is a caveat. The stocks on this laptop are very very limited, since it was completely sold out in a flash sale on 15th September,so keep an eye out for its availability

14. Acer Predator Helios 300

(Intel i7 9750H,RTX2060,16GB RAM, 1TB HDD,256GB SSD,144hz Screen)

Check Availability : Flipkart

The only real alternative to the Omen is the Helios 300,which has similar specs at around 5,000 less money. But,stocks are very limited and come around very rarely.

So, in conclusion, If you are planning to buy your very own gaming laptop, be patient and choose wisely. Timing is crucial and if you keep track of big sales and discounts, you could bag a very good deal this year.

So that was it folks , let us know in comments which one you finally bought and which games you played on it!
