The most popular games this year (in no particular order) are:

1 DOOM Eternal

“Hell’s armies have invaded Earth. Become the Slayer in an epic single-player campaign to conquer demons across dimensions and stop the final destruction of humanity. The only thing they fear… is you.”

DOOM Eternal is a first-person shooter mixing fast-paced combat with an ever-increasing difficulty and platforming to create a unique fast paced experience. You play as the “Slayer”, Armed with a shoulder-mounted flamethrower, retractable wrist-mounted blade, upgraded guns and mods, and abilities, you’re faster, stronger, and more versatile than ever.

Bigger, crazier and weirder than ever, the new title in the DOOM series has lots of new stuff in store. New enemies and creatures, varied levels and environments and tons of lore! Don’t worry, the game still preserves the fast-paced, adrenaline packed, fun gameplay from previous titles while being faster, smoother and even more gore(!!). And the new locations look absolutely stunning!

There is greater focus on platforming and level design and environment creation which is evident from the new outdoor-city setting. Exploration is encouraged and rewards you with rare collectibles, loot and “Runes”.

The difficulty of the game as a whole has been increased a notch and with that, you are given new combat abilities. Lighting up a monster on fire with the flamethrower makes it drop armour shards, “Glory killing” them nets you health and “Chainsawing” them gains you ammunition.

You can collect “batteries” while playing which you can trade in for more weapon upgrades, mods etc.

On the multiplayer aspect of the game, it does not go the traditional battle royale route and instead goes for a more Doom style with 2 vs 1 matches. In it, a fully armed Doom Slayer is pitted against two player controlled demons fighting it out in a best of five match.

Available on: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Google Stadia

Warning: This game depicts large amounts of gore, blood, violence and strong language.

2 Fall Guys

“A massively multiplayer party game with up to 60 players online in a free-for-all struggle through round after round of escalating chaos until one victor remains!”

Fall Guys is a battle royale style platformer filled with bright colours, upbeat music, fun mini games and lovable characters all bumbling their way to victory or hilarious failure. Battle bizarre obstacles, shove through unruly competitors, and overcome the unbending laws of physics as you stumble towards greatness! If you know Takeshi’s Castle, then you know this game, and you’re awesome!

You control one of the 60 jellybean shaped characters which are in for a last-person standing wins type of game. The thing is that, it is not at all like other such games. This game is nuts! (pun intended)

You’re eliminated through many rounds of random maps, modes and challenges. The game is notoriously tough to score a win while being hilarious at the same time. You can screw with with other people by grabbing and moving them around or tipping them over. That’s it.. Really.

What makes this game one of the best is that this game has that addictive classic solid platformer adrenaline rush; “I know how to jump, i will win this time for sure! One more round, it will only take a few minutes”. This game is goofy, fun and easy to get into.

There are lots of fun game modes with more added with each update. There is progression with every game, whether you win or lose, it is also tied to the season-pass (which is free). You can level up to unlock new skins. You can use the in-game currency “Kudos” to get even more skins and other goodies and you can use “Crown” wins to get the rare skins and costumes.

For the ₹530 its selling for on Steam, which in our opinion is more than justified for the entertainment value you get out of it, it’s a fantastic game that is incredibly fun to play with a group of friends.

3 Cyberpunk 2077

“Cyberpunk 2077 is a narrative driven open-world first-person role-playing-game set in a dark version of the future.”

Cyberpunk 2077 is a highly anticipated upcoming RPG developed by CD Projekt Red. It is scheduled to be released for PC, PS4 and Xbox One on 19th November 2020, and on the upcoming consoles in 2021.

Heavily drawing inspiration from the movie Blade Runner and anime like Akira and Ghost in the Shell, the game is set in “Night City”, California. Year 2077. The game takes place after the 4th corporate war. The Night City has six distinct districts and a wasteland to it’s name. You play as “V”, a mercenary in pursuit of the “chip of immortality”.

V is highly customisable, ranging from masculine/feminine body type, voice and looks (instead of a hard set gender) to sophisticated clothing or the lack of it; And so is your background history, out of the 3 presets: Corpo-Rat, Nomad and StreetKid with each having it’s perks. All of these customizations have an impact over the story and how the game unfolds, with multiple endings.

Speaking of endings, there is no morality system in the game Implying that there isn’t a set good storyline to follow or a “good” ending. CDPR is moving on from the good/bad morale system opting instead for a “reputation” system. You will have varying levels of reputation with every faction called “Street Cred”, governing the relations with the said faction, much like the charisma factor of many other games. There are many factions in the game with the prominent ones being The Militec, The Maelstrom and the Trauma Team and probably more yet to be revealed.

There is a diverse stats system with a range of skills enabling a wide spectrum of playstyles, one stat that especially caught our eyes from the gameplay demo was the “cool” stat, sticking out of the rest, in a good way. It refers as to how well V can handle situations and it’s cool. Like if you have a low cool stat, you won’t be able to lie convincingly.

Lastly, for the folks who don’t want in any of the violent stuff, you will be able to do a pacifist run.

Based on the history of the studio, we highly recommend this title.

4 Call Of Duty : Warzone

Call of Duty: Warzone is a free-to-play battle royale game, a free stand-alone expansion for the previous title in the COD franchise, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

COD: Warzone is a stand-alone expansion of COD: Modern Warfare, essentially an upgraded version of COD: Blackout, the previous battle royale title in the COD franchise. Featuring new game modes and mechanics, it has rejuvenated the COD battle royale scene.

The game has two game modes, the regular battle royale and a new mode called “Plunder”.

Battle royale mode is the same as the previous Blackout, but supports 150 players, and sometimes even up to 200 players for some game modes. The teams are comprised of 2, 3 or 4 players each or solo players.

In the new “Plunder” mode, the goal is to collect the most amount of “Cash”, the in-game currency scattered across the map by looting, raiding and stealing from other teams. You can also gain cash by completing objectives you get while wandering around the map.

There is a new re-spawn mechanic added to the game, when you are eliminated for the first time, you are sent to the “Gulag” where you are faced with another eliminated player, whoever beats the other gets to re-spawn with either a basic weapon or none. If in the rare case that it is a tie, both of the players will re-spawn.

Both of the game modes take pace on the same map called “Verdansk”, which has a good mix of different settings from dense city blocks to rural areas. For travelling around quickly you have access to several vehicles like ATVs, Trucks and even Helicopters!

“Cash” can be used at buy stations marked on the map where you can purchase weapons skins, mods, kill-streaks and redeploy tokens/kits for reviving team-mates or yourself.

Also, there is backwards and forward compatibility between Modern Warfare and Warzone for all the battlepass items, operators, weapons, customization and even progress in multiplayer rankings! There is nothing to lose.

5 Minecraft

Minecraft is a sandbox video game dating back to 2009, coming out of testing stage in 2011. It has become the best selling video game of all time as of 2020.

Minecraft has a very distinct retro look of 8-bit pixel art with blocky environments all built up with lego like cubes. You can term minecraft as a sandbox experience rather than a game as it’s up to you what you make of it.

When you start the game at first, you are dropped in an infinite 3D blocky world with a simple pickaxe. You can easily mine resources and use them to build up whatever you wish, be it new tools and items or big structures. Although the more rarer resources need some exploration to find and better tools to mine.

There are 4 game modes- Survival mode, where you have an HP bar, a hunger bar and you have to build up a safe residence to defend yourself from wildlife, zombies and peculiar enemies like “creepers”; Creative mode, where you get infinite access to all the resources and the ability to fly around; Adventure mode, where you get to experience worlds created by others; and lastly Spectator mode.

The game is very modification friendly, and you can create entirely new game modes, items and assets.

Sure, minecraft is about a decade old now, but it has made a rapid comeback in popularity thanks to the dedicated community of players, continued updates and new content from the creator Mojang and the youtuber PewDiePie revisiting the game in 2019. All of this has resulted in a steady increase in the player count for this sandbox heaven.

6 Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020

“From light planes to wide-body jets, fly highly detailed and accurate aircraft in the next generation of Microsoft Flight Simulator. Test your piloting skills against the challenges of night flying, real-time atmospheric simulation and live weather in a dynamic and living world.”

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 is the latest in the flight simulator series, released more than a decade after Flight Simulator X.

It is a simulator, meaning that it puts more emphasis on accurately replicating real world behaviour rather being a pretty game. But fret not, because it is not the case with this one, it has both accurate simulation along with game changing graphics. (ha ha)

It blows my mind what you can do in this simulator, it has a 1:1 replica of the Earth in the sim with many layers of detail! It gives everyone a chance to fly anywhere in the world, in striking realism. The weather simulation is incredible! The geography and terrain is accurate in 3D, there are 1.5 billion buildings with a good level of detail, not to forget the 2 trillion(!) trees populating the world. Just as detailed is the night sky, with accurate star locations and all the constellations are visible.

If you are connected to the internet while playing, the simulation will have live-air-traffic around and real-time live weather conditions and much more detailed terrain. Like if it is snowing at your location, and you fly through that area, the weather will be snowy in the sim. And the flight you see twinkling in the distance is an actual flight flying in the real world! This is why it is also used in flight instruction. You will need a good internet connection for the aforementioned features though, but the sim also works without it. Work is continuously being done for even more accurate weather, city details, new aircraft (helicopters) and robust modding support.

It has accurate reproductions of all the man-made landmarks. It is no replacement for actually visiting the monuments in person, but it is the next best thing, especially in these times. You can go fly anywhere in a surprisingly accurate virtual copy the world, fly over a place and exclaim: “It actually does look like it does in real life!”

Gamification of such sim experiences have already given us so many amazing games and this is the latest addition to the sim-game list.

I would highly recommend this title for both avid flyers and newcomers to the flight sim world. The tutorials are basic, but more than enough to get you started.

This is one of the rare “games” which you can use to learn flying a real aircraft! If there’s a game your parents won’t object to, this is it.

…did i mention this sim has animals? ANIMALS IN A FLIGHT SIMULATION!!

7 Apex Legends

Apex Legends is a free-to-play first-person-shooter battle royale game based in the Titanfall universe.

Unlike some battle royale shooters, it is heavily team focussed and has a hero based system.

You can select one of the 14 heroes (at the time of writing this article), called “Legends”, each having a unique design, personality, and abilities.

Generally featuring twenty teams of three-player squads, each squad has 3 unique legends. You can also play in squads of 2 people or go in solo depending on the game mode. One of the players in each squad is the “jump-master” choosing when to jump out of the aircraft and where to land, however, players are free to deviate from the set path.

The map is an island in the Titanfall world with the aforementioned “Titans” visible in the distance in the seas. It is divided into many tiered locations based on the amount of loot, generally, most of the higher tiered areas are located near the edge of the map but it can vary with each round. Players can be revived and resurrected by their squad-mates by collecting their re-spawn banner from where they went down.

Every season (3 months) a new legend, guns and cosmetics are released. The game does have loot-boxes and micro-transactions.

Available on: PC, PS4, Xbox One

8 Death Stranding

Death Stranding is the latest title by Hideo Kojima, made under the banner Kojima Productions. The game is set in the United States following a cataclysmic event which has torn the world apart. You play the role of a porter, named Sam Porter Bridges. It is a single-player game with a weird multiplayer experience.

It is an absolutely remarkable game with a very powerful sensational experience.

“What are we talking about”, you say?.. Let us explain;

This a game which can not be categorised in any of the known game genres, it is game where you are tasked with the job of a porter, delivering parcels and supplies from one settlement to another, occasionally bumping into some hostile rogue porters, but the best course of action would be to back away instead of fighting. You will have to stealthily steer away from ghostly apparitions.

Kojima-san describes this as a game about building connections with people, both the NPCs and real world people. While you will never meet another player in game as it is, like, multiplayer without actual multiplayer, you’ll likely devote large portions of your time putting up infrastructure easing the journey across the treacherous lands to “help out other players” or “finish what other players started”, just like someone else helped you out at some point in the game. You’ll never meet them. You can only hope that you’ve been helpful.

Also Read : Best Gaming Laptops in India

That hope and will to help is the social aspect, the weird multiplayer, the “Strand” connecting you to others. This explains the “Strand” or “Social” genre Kojima-san assigned to the game.

On the technical side of things, each game world is shared by multiple players, but their quests, progression etc. is totally independent of each other except the infrastructure put up by them on the map. It remains in the shared game world, and everyone is able to interact with it.

It is an addicting game. The mantra of this game is that, The Journey is the Experience. It is as important as the destination itself, it is what matters in the end.

This game will reprogram your brain away from the traditional instant gratification of modern games, you will feel connected to people you’ll never meet. And this feeling, sets your soul free.

9 Half-Life: Alyx

Half-Life: Alyx is a VR (virtual reality) first person shooter set in between the events of Half-Life and Half-Life 2. It’s one of the first single-player VR games of decent length.

Gamers around the world had been asking for HL3 for years upon years, HL3 became a meme in the gaming community. Finally, our wishes have been answered, kind of.

HL: Alyx is set in City 17 and takes place few years before the events of HL2, you play as Alex Vance at the age of 19, working for the resistance.

The game is in VR, it’s coming after a long hiatus but it stays true to it’s origin, it feels distinctly Half Lifey, with the hilarious dialogues, puzzles, minigames and familiar enemies with new spins on them as well as totally new entrants. There are surprises and easter eggs scattered everywhere! Plus it looks really good and immersive.

For movement, it supports all the options available in VR and all of them work great, especially the point and teleport blink mode. And for grabbing stuff, the game has “gravity gloves” which allows you to grab objects easily from a distance by pointing at them, although you can still manually grab things with your VR stick. Once you learn how to move and grab things, the game feels highly polished.

It is unfortunate that this game is a VR exclusive and many people won’t be able to experience it, but for those who have the means, we highly recommend it.

The game supports all Steam VR-compatible VR headsets, which include the Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift/Quest (wired/wireless) and all Windows Mixed Reality headsets.

Available on: PC *A Virtual/Mixed Reality setup is necessary for playing the game.

10 Resident Evil 3

“Resident Evil 3, a survival horror game follows Jill Valentine and Carlos Oliveira as they attempt to survive a zombie apocalypse while being hunted by the intelligent bioweapon, Nemesis.”

This is an amazing remake of the old Resident Evil 3. The events of Resident Evil 3 take place just before RE2 and their timelines intertwine at some points. There is not much else to say about it otherwise we may spoil the plot for new players. The graphics are top notch (obviously), Jill looks gorgeous, Nemesis got a makeover, levels are bigger and have more variety to them than the remake of RE2 has. It looks great, feels great, plays great!

It also includes a multiplayer minigame called Resident Evil: Resistance, in which a group of players, each with a unique character and traits are locked up in an area. The objective is to try and find items to open doors and get to the exit. One of the players is the “mastermind” and controls the traps and zombies. It is a fun game but ultimately the story is the primary focus and selling point of the game and it is done right.

Also Read : Best Gaming Monitors Under 20000 in India

But it has one shortcoming, that may scare some people away. The length of the game is very short, at under 5 hours. You can probably finish the game in one sitting. And this is amplified by the game’s cost, at ₹3500 the game time is not justifiable. Dedicated fans of the Resident Evil franchise can probably take the hit, but for more casual people the current price is a lil bit too steep. We recommend waiting until a sale or the price drops.

11 Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition

Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition is a remaster of the original Age of Empires 2 game released in 1999.

The remaster brings many improvements over the original game like new features, updated graphics, new animations, quality-of-life improvements, bugfixes and totally new content.

The graphics feel much more lifelike and modern now, and there is an optional enhanced graphics pack available for download for free; They have added zoom in/out functionality to the game; Collapsing buildings have an animation now instead of just disappearing to rubble; Reworked audio system.

All of these add up to an immersive and modern experience for a 20 years old game! Nothing like zooming out to view the entire map or watching the enemy castle burn and fall in beautiful detail..

Apart from all of these upgrades, they have also added new content to the game with 4 new civilizations and an equal amount of new campaigns. The 4 new civilizations are, Tartars, Lithuanians, Cumans and Bulgarians and the new campaigns are Ivaylo, Kotyan Khan, Tamerlane and Pachacuti.

The AI difficulty has been reworked and a new extreme AI has been added. AI can now play competitively without cheating, it can pull-off things previously thought impossible like bringing in deer and achieving a castle time less than pro players! The tutorial, now renamed to “Art of War” can now train you for multiplayer and a new mod and scenario section is added for browsing, un/installing and switching them on/off directly in-game.

They’ve also implemented some quality of life improvements like automatic farm reseeding, build and action queues to name the ones with the most impact.

On the multiplayer side of things, they have overhauled the whole networking system, implementing a modern client-server based model in place of the old and laggy peer-to-peer model. It is now easy to find both ranked and unranked games. A proper spectator mode has also been added.

Overall, the definitive edition looks great and offers the best experience AOE has to offer. It’s selling for ₹530 on steam including the base game and all the expansions! It can’t be better than this.

Available on: PC

September is just coming to an end, and with the upcoming next generation consoles releasing just before the holiday season, surely, many more games will drop before the end of the year and we will continue to update this list as they come.
