Plagiarism Defined Beyond Written Content

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when we think about plagiarism or a plagiarist? The most common thought that comes to our mind is a student, who got caught for copying someone else’s work for a school assignment or paper.

Or maybe the thought of a writer or a blogger stealing other writers/bloggers ideas and text and putting it online as their own. We often heard about the importance of using a plagiarism checker free for a quick plagiarism check for students.

Yes, these would have to be the most common scenarios, but plagiarism is a very broad term. Unfortunately, it’s not only limited to students and writers but can affect professionals from all walks of life.

How Plagiarism affects us ?

Let me tell you an exciting story back from the year 2016 that will reinforce my point that no one… and I mean no one is safe from the harmful effects of this sin, be it an actor, a songwriter, a celebrity. Chances are that you have heard the uproar about this 2016 incident already. Let me do a brief recap for you.

It was the year 2016. The race for America’s next president was in full swing as the two main contestants Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump both had their eyes set on the Presidential seat. Amidst controversies and tensions on a high came Melania Trump’s speech scandal. The speech took place on stage at the Republican National Convention. She gave a speech on behalf of Donald trump. Halfway through her speech, there was a deafening silence.

Well yes her speech delivery was good, but the silence was not because the audience was in awe of her but rather the audience was in shock at what she was saying. A speech with literally the same wording had been given by First Lady Michelle Obama at the Democratic National Convention some 8 years ago.

Let me post bits of both their speeches here for you, so you can compare and see what I’m talking about.

Melania Trump in her 2016 speech said, “From a young age, my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life, that your word is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise, that you treat people with respect.”

In 2008, Michelle Obama had said, “Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values — like you work hard for what you want in life, that your word is your bond and you do what you say you’re going to do, that you treat people with dignity and respect.”

Whoa!! It’s the same, isn’t it? Word by word. This is plagiarism at its peak. Although there is no text involved but that’s what plagiarism is, to copy someone else’s ideas and portraying them as your own, whether in writing or speech.  Although it wasn’t the biggest plagiarism scandal in terms of words, it did get the headlines rolling. The blame was finally put on the writer who wrote her speech.

This story is a very strong reminder that plagiarism can hit you in the most unlikely of places. When it does, regardless of whether you are a student, a writer, a professional or even a celebrity… boy are you in for a lot of embarrassment.

How To Avoid Plagiarism ?

Now, this episode could have been easily avoided if a plagiarism checker had been used for the content. The point is that a plagiarism check is not necessary only for students; in fact you should check for plagiarism no matter what your field might be. You can easily find countless free plagiarism checker tools on the internet.

I know of an amazing plagiarism checker free to register available at https://www.plagiarismsoftware.net/.

The plagiarism checker available on this website is easy to use. All you need to do to check plagiarism is to put the text in the box and hit the button “check plagiarism” and you will get the result. Links will be given to original sites in cases of even 1% plagiarism.

Though the Melania Trump’s speech fiasco died out eventually but it could have been avoided in the first place; that is if a plagiarism checker had been used to check plagiarism. So next time if you are on stage giving a speech, be careful and make sure to run a plagiarism checker on your speech using plagiarism checker first. Trust me you wouldn’t want to be another Melania Trump, at least not for her speech disaster!
